Poor Polly woke her owners up early in the morning as she was extremely restless and behaving strangely. She was hiding, crying, licking her lips and vomiting. Her owners were really worried and brought her in to see us. We admitted Polly for a blood sample and x-rays. The blood test came back normal which was good news; however, the x-ray revealed that Polly had swallowed something she shouldn’t have! A STONE! There was only one thing to do; operate on her straight away to remove it to avoid it causing any damage to her intestine.
It was also causing a blockage that made her vomit and feel very uncomfortable, as you can imagine! Sorcha, one of our Veterinary surgeons, carried out the delicate procedure of removing the stone from Polly’s intestine. The surgery was a complete success and Polly was up and about soon afterwards ready for some food. Polly went home that evening and it was important that her owners fed her a little bit at a time and keep her rested. Being a spaniel this was no small task! However, her owners did an amazing job and after only a week Polly was signed off from her ordeal and given a clean bill of health!
Polly was such a super star when she was in and she gave us all a shock when we first saw her x-ray. We all hope she sticks to dog food from now on!
